Porsche 911 Dakar 2023: A legend reincarnated

It was in 1984 that Porsche won the famous Paris-Dakar Rally with the legendary 911 4×4. It’s a car that’s now a darling of the auto industry, and the manufacturer has decided to revive it with the current generation of the 911. Porsche has invited the Car Guide team within the framework of the Los Angeles Auto Show. Compared to the GTS version of the new Porsche 911 Dakar, which will be produced in a limited edition of 2,500 units, which will be vintage in 2023 and 2024, it can be raised by up to 80 mm. Unsurprisingly, the vehicle inherits the 473-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged engine taken from the 911 GTS, the only difference being the highly efficient cooling system taken from the 911 Turbo. Extremely fast and 10 kg lighter than the PDK gearbox-equipped 911 Carrera GTS 4 (total 1,605 kg), the 911 Dakar completes 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. However, because of the tires, the top speed is limited to 240 km/h. Interestingly, however, the suspension can be raised to its maximum level until the vehicle reaches 170 km/h, after which it automatically lowers to a minimum level. Photo: Antoine Joubert Built to go anywhere The 911 Dakar is obviously designed to stand up to the worst conditions. Whether you’re driving in sand, mud, dirt or snow, the different driving modes allow you to drive in your own way. Porsche is also adding two unique modes: “Off-Road” and “Rally” modes. The latter allows for high-speed driving by sending more torque to the rear axle to see more wandering rear axles. Then, when the ‘off-road’ mode is selected, the performance of the transmission is separately managed, as well as the function of automatically raising the suspension. When either of these two modes are selected, the shooting mode boosts wheel spin by 20% compared to the “sport” mode. It is Pirelli that Porsche has chosen to trust to fit the 911 Dakar. The car comes standard with the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus in certain formats, fitted with size P245/45ZR19 tires at the front and P295/40ZR20 size tires at the rear. According to Porsche, these tires are capable of providing optimum performance in sand and dirt while providing excellent comfort and quietness on the road. However, genuine summer or winter tires of the Pirelli brand can be purchased as an option through the dealer. Photo: Antoine Joubert Pretty cool looking! Aesthetically, it is distinguished by Dakar as well as exclusive bumpers, a hood taken from the 911 GT3 and rims inspired by its predecessor. Then, to properly protect the mechanical elements, Porsche added an underbody protection plate made of stainless steel with a thickness of 0.8 mm. The rear spoiler is fixed and lightweight to optimize the car’s performance. Porsche is also using lighter windows and lighter batteries (taken from the new 911 T) to save weight. On the roof side, Porsche has equipped the 911 Dakar with 12-volt sockets for connecting the fog lights. A roof rack that can accommodate loads of up to 42kg is also available as an option. The interior presentation is in harmony with the model’s adventurous side by offering a faux-leather upholstery called Race-Tex. Also like the 911 T, the vehicle does not have rear seats. Photo: Antoine Joubert One of the most notable elements of the 911 Dakar is, by far, the Rallye design package available for $32,490. The latter has a skin directly inspired by the skin of the Paris-Dakar winning car, but the words Rothmans (sponsored by a cigarette manufacturer at the time) have been replaced with the words Roughroads. In addition to the white-painted rims, blue and white paint with red and gold decorative bands come with this set, and you can also incorporate a number of your choice for identification on the doors. The number of units featuring the Rallye Design package is unlimited, suggesting that the majority of buyers will have a choice. VIDEO: We hit the track in the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3!
